Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Coop (WSS) junior Megan Schlechte made IHSA history while powering the Hatchets into the Class 1A Girls Volleyball State Championship match on Friday, November 10, 2017.

Facing off against Durand in a Class 1A semifinal at Redbird Arena, Schlechte pounded a state final single-match record 29 kills in the contest, helping WSS to a three-game triumph (27-25, 24-26, 25-19).

The previous record had stood for two decades, dating back to when Mother McAuley’s Katie Schumacher notched 28 kills during the Mighty Macs three-game loss to Downers Grove South (15-12, 10-15, 15-13) in the 1996 Class AA state championship match.

Schlechte tallied 12 kills in the first set, eight in the second, while her ninth in the third set clinched the match.

Fellow Hatchet junior Mackenzi Tabbert assisted on most of Schlechte’s kills en route to 48 helpers in the match. Tabbert’s 48 assists was a Class 1A State Final single-match record, but still well shy of the overall state final record of 62 set by Springfield Lutheran’s Jennifer Backs in the 2002 quarterfinals.

Schlechte entered the state tournament with 490 kills, and completed her season with 525 kills after getting six more in a state championship loss to Payson Seymour. The tally ties her for 17th in state history for most kills in a campaign.
