The 2012 IHSA Girls Gymnastics State Finals will unfold at Palatine High School in Palatine on Friday and Saturday, February 17-18. The 2012 tournament marks the 36th consecutive season that a State Series will be contested in girl’s gymnastics and the 34th year in a row that Palatine High School will serve as the host.
The team champion, individual All-Around champion and state champions in the Vault, Uneven Parallel Bars, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise will all be crowned on Saturday. Friday’s prelims will determine the Top 10 competitors in each event that move on to Saturday’s finals. Team points are accumulated on Friday, but competitors can add to their team total on Saturday with a higher scoring routine.
Carmel won its second consecutive and fourth overall team state championship a year ago behind Lauren Feely and Kristin Mirski, who both return in 2012. Feely is the defending state champion in the Balance Beam, while Mirski took home top honors in the Floor Exercise in 2011 and was the All-Around champ at the Niles North Sectional this year.
Prairie Ridge’s Jenny Covers won the two remaining events at the 2011 state meet en route to the All-Around title as senior, but despite her departure, the Wolves and freshman Rachael Underwood still look like a contender after posting the second-best team Sectional score (147.250) in the state this season.
New Trier has not taken home hardware from the state meet since 1993, but will look to return to the Top 3 in the team standings in 2012 behind freshman Smantha Stoddart, who achieved the top Sectional score in the state in the Balance Beam last week.
Meanwhile, two-time state champion Glenbard North (1982, 1983) and two-time runner-up Lyons (1999, 2010) both looked poised to contend for the team championship after posting strong performances during Sectionals. The Panthers and Lions are led by senior Amanda Quinn and freshman Kelsy Kurfirst, respectively.
DeKalb senior Alyssa Lopez, an individual qualifier, was the state’s best in the Uneven Parallel Bars during Sectionals and also notched the second-highest All-Around score. Sonya Brandon’s state title in the Balance Beam in 1986 remains the lone DeKalb event state title winner in the sport.
