The 2012 IHSA Competitive Cheerleading State Finals are set to unfold on Friday and Saturday, February 3-4. The setting for the tournament, which crowns state champions in Small, Medium, Large and Coed classes, will be Bloomington’s U.S. Cellular Coliseum. The 2012 season marks the seventh annual edition of the cheerleading state championships and the sixth year at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. For the third consecutive year, the entire event will be streamed live on IHSA.tv (www.IHSA.tv), and available to be viewed any time on-demand after the conclusion of the event. The free webcast will feature video of every team’s performance.

SMALL

After producing five different state champions in the first five years of the state tournament, the Small Class saw its first two-time champion a year ago, as Columbia took home back-to-back to state championships. The Eagles are back for a chance at a three-peat, but will be pushed by fellow 2012 Sectional champions Byron (8th in 2011), New Berlin, Somonauk and Eureka. The parity of the Small Class is exemplified by the fact that none of the class’s state champs from 2005 through 2008 qualified for this year’s field.

MEDIUM

Lemont won its third consecutive Medium Class state championship a year ago after edging Antioch (91.18 to 91.10). Oak Forest could be deemed as one of the favorites in 2012, as the Lady Bengals edged Lemont and two-time state champ Tinley Park for the Joliet Central Sectional crown this year. Antioch and fellow 2011 state meet Top 10 finisher, Mascoutah, enter the state finals with the momentum of Sectional victories, while Normal University and St. Viator also both won Sectional crowns in 2012.

LARGE

Lake Zurich ended Conant’s bid for back-to-back Large Class state titles a year ago, as the Bears score of 93.96 bested Conant’s 93.74 to give Lake Zurich its first cheer state championship. Providence (3rd) and Marist (6th) both placed in the Top 10 a year ago at the state meet and won Sectional titles this season, as did 2011 runner-up Conant. Joliet West and Carmel claimed the two remaining Sectional crowns in 2012, with West topping two-time state champ Lockport to earn its title.

COED

Lake Park became the first school not named Elk Grove Village to win the Coed Class state championship a year ago, as Elk Grove had won the class during the first five editions of the tourney. Buffalo Grove (4th) and Barrington (7th) both won Sectional titles in 2012 after placing in the Top 10 at the 2011 state meet, while two-time runner-up O’Fallon also enters on the heels of a Sectional title. Fox Lake Grant and Bolingbrook won the final two Sectional meets this season, with Grant topping Mundelein, last year’s third-place team at state, for the Sectional win.
