The 2012 IHSA Boys & Girls Cross Country State Finals return to Detweiller Park in Peoria on Saturday, November 3, marking the 67th annual season of the boy’s state finals and the 34th of the girl’s state meet. All six races will unfold over the three-mile course at Detweiller Park, which is hosting the event for the 43rd consecutive year. The sixth-year of the three-class state championship series will be documented on IHSA.tv, which will release highlights of the races on the website in the days that follow the meet.
1A GIRLS
St. Teresa ended Winnebago’s streak of five straight state titles in 2010 by claiming the Class 1A crown and now look to move a step closer to matching that mark, as the two-time defending champs vie for a three-peat behind a trio of returning Top 11 finishers from a year ago.

Mt. Zion edged runner-up Tolono Unity by 12 points to claim its first cross country state title in school history a year ago. The Braves will have another tough road ahead of them with the top five team finishers from a year ago all returning, while the school could challenge for its first individual crown with the return of Jake Brown.

2A GIRLS
Yorkville finished as the runner-up at the state meet in both 2010 and 2011, falling by six and 17 points, respectively, before winning the school’s first state title in girls cross country a year ago. The Lady Foxes are back to defend their crown, while Crystal Lake Central hopes to follow Yorkville’s path from runner-up to champion with defending individual champ Sami Staples leading the way.

In 2010, Belvidere North High School left the field in the dust en route to its second consecutive state title, besting the runner-up by 125 points. The Blue Thunder won their third straight championship in 2011, but runner-up Glenbard South significantly narrowed the gap from 2010 (18 points) and is among several schools who hope to overtake Belvidere North in 2012.

New Trier ran away from the field in 2011 and brought home the school’s first championship trophy in girls cross country. With three returnees who placed among the Top 11 individuals a year ago back in 2012, the Trevians will look to follow Geneva (2007-2008) to become the second school to repeat in Class 3A in the three-class era.

Palatine had finished as the runner-up at the state meet five times, including three times since 2003, before the Pirates finally broke through last year for the school’s first team state title in boys cross country. O’Fallon, the 2011 runner-up by six points, returns a host of talent and expects to push Palatine again in 2012.
