After 39 years as the head football coach at Newman Central Catholic High School in Sterling, Mike Papoccia has announced his retirement.
The legendary coach exits with a career record of 340-99 and five state championship victories in seven trips to the title round.
Papoccia is shown above in-game during the 2013 IHSA Class 2A State Championship, which his Comets won over Staunton. Papoccia led squads also hoisted state titles in 1990, 1994, 2004, and 2010.
