In 1986, then Peoria Journal Star writer Mike Bailey wrote the following story about the IHSA Cross Country State Finals at Detweiller Park in Peoria entitled "It's A Race You Never Forget".

The story was republished by the IHSA in the 1987 IHSA Cross Country State Final program.
