Charleston High School senior Lauren Chappell made history on Saturday, October 15, 2016 when she won the individual medalist honors at the 2016 IHSA Girls Golf State Finals.
The individual state crown was the third of Chappell’s career, marking the first time in state history since the tournament began in 1975 that a player won three times in their career.
Chappell’s streak was somewhat unconventional in that she won the Class 1A crown as a freshman (with her best state final score) and sophomore, tied for fourth as a junior, and then returned to the top of the leaderboard as a senior. Her senior year effort also included teaming to win the Class 1A team state championship, the first in school history.
The state tournament was held at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur in each of her four seasons. Playing the Par 72 (36-36) course from the Red Tees, Chappell managed to post her best 18-hole state final round of 68 on the 5,394-yard course on the Friday of her freshman year.
