The 2019 IHSA Girls Bowling State Finals take center stage at The Cherry Bowl in Rockford on Friday and Saturday, February 15-16.
The IHSA’s Wheelchair Division will feature four competitors this season in Mascoutah sophomore Olivia Moyer, Triad junior Chenoa Stokes, and Elk Grove Village junior Sonia Sanchez-Corrillo and freshman Natalia Villegas.
Harlem repeated as team state champions a year ago, besting runner-up Hoffman Estates by over 400 pins. The state title was the school’s seventh in program history, all coming since 2000. Harlem is the only program in state history to threepeat (2000-2002) and the Sectional champs have a legitimate chance to match that mark again with defending individual state champion Rebecca Hagerman (2,669 in 2018) and Kayla Verstraete (8th, 2,512 in 2018) both back for their senior seasons. An individual Sectional winner this season, Hagerman looks to become the third bowler in state history to win two individual state crowns.
Schaumburg scored its best finish since the Saxons were state runners-up in 2008 last year, placing third behind a young group. The team welcomes back its top five players from last year’s state meet, including seniors Kylie Frick (7th, 2,516 in 2018) and Gina Lenoci (25th, 2,385 in 2018), who helped the squad to a Sectional title last week.
O’Fallon missed a trophy by 15 pins a year ago, finishing just behind Schaumburg in fourth-place. Like Schaumburg, the Panthers welcome back all of their scoring players from last year’s state finals, including senior Lauren Tomaszewski, who placed fifth in 2018 with a score 2,545. O’Fallon enters the weekend with the momentum of Sectional team and individual titles (Mary Orf, 1,334), as the program hopes to capture its first trophy in the sport.
Joliet West (10th in 2018) and Joliet Central clashed at Sectionals, with West ultimately prevailing behind the performance of individual champ Brooklin Chavez, who had the state’s best Sectional score at 1,388. The Steelwomen were paced by Devon Thomas (1,266) and hope to top their fellow district school this weekend in Rockford. West’s Sectional score of 6,124 and Central’s Sectional pinfall of 5,917 were good for the fourth- and fifth-best in the state.
WIllowbrook and Lockport rounded out the Sectional team champs in 2019. Lockport tallied the second-best Sectional score in the state (6,269) behind the performances of juniors Jessica Ramirez (1,307) and Samantha Traina (1,304). Willowbrook is led by senior Holly Helsper, who placed 11th at the 2018 state finals with a score of 2,486.
Freeport has five straight Top 10 team finishes (2nd in 2016) after placing fifth a year ago, and is led by junior Bailey Busker in 2019. Salem (6th), Minooka (7th) and Guilford (9th) all return to the state final field after recording Top 10 performances a year ago. Minooka senior Kristina Sickler was sixth in the state last year (2,540), while Salem senior Kayla Smith returns after a Top 30 finish a year ago (T28th, 2,373).
Two other individual Sectional champs helped power their teams to the state finals in Glenbard East junior Molly Galvin (1,354) and Andrew junior Noelle Doody (1,331).
Wauconda junior Jasmine McKeel rounds out the Individual Sectional champs (1,337) as an individual qualifier, while Barrington senior Jenica Baron (21st, 2,397) is another individual qualifier with a Top 25 resume from a year ago.
