The 2018 IHSA Speech-Individual Events State Finals will be held on Friday and Saturday, February 16-17 at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria. The 2018 state meet marks the 78th annual edition of the state final and the ninth year that the Peoria Civic Center has hosted the event.
Saturday's award performances will be streamed live on the NFHS Network via www.IHSA.tv at 5:30 p.m. with a subscription.
State champions will be crowned in 14 events over the course of the meet, including an overall team champion based upon points earned in each individual event. A top team will also be recognized in the Performance in the Round category, although that event does not earn points toward the overall team title.
The most successful program in IHSA speech history, Downers Grove South, returned to the summit of Illinois high school speech in 2017, as the Mustangs hoisted their 17th overall state title, which was also their first since 2012 and first since NFHS Hall of Fame coach Jan Heiteen retired. Downers Grove South (Humorous Interpretation) edged runner-up Wheaton Warrenville South (Impromptu Speaking) by two points (34-32) for the title, as both programs produced one event state champion. Prospect finished third, as the 2016 state champion marked its second straight season bringing a trophy home from the state tournament. Glenbard West and Oak Lawn Community rounded out the Top 5, marking the Hilltoppers return to Top 10 after a one-year hiatus, while Oak Lawn has Top 5 finishes in three of the past four years. Neuqua Valley (6th), Hinsdale Central (7th), Richards (8th), Elk Grove Village (9th) and Downers Grove North (10th) rounded out the Top 10 in 2017.
