The 2018 IHSA Girls Gymnastics State Finals will be contested on February 16-17 at Palatine High School (click here to listen to the history of PHS hosting state gymnastics).
Friday’s action will determine an individual All-Around champion and factor into the team scoring. On Saturday, individual state champions will be crowned in the Vault, Uneven Parallel Bars, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise. Friday’s prelims will determine the Top 10 competitors in each event that move on to Saturday’s finals. Team points are accumulated on Friday, but competitors can add to their team total on Saturday with a higher scoring routine.
In addition, Saturday's state meet will also serve as the stage to recognize, Bill Stone, who will be awarded his IHSA Distinguished Media Service Award.
Prairie Ridge claimed its third consecutive team state title a year ago behind All-Around state champ Nikki Baars. Baars has since graduated, but plenty of talent returns, including junior Kira Karlblom, a Sectional champ in the Floor Exercise who will try to help the program finish first or second for the sixth straight season.
Glenbrook South placed third a year ago, its best finish since 1979, and the Titans are now eyeing their first state title in program history. In Sectionals, sophomore Jenna Hartley won a pair of event titles (Floor Exercise, Vault), while freshman Sheena Graham claimed the All-Around crown.
New Trier hasn’t hosted a girls’ gymnastics state final trophy since 1993, but that could change this year behind sophomore Maeve Murdock and junior Darcy Barkal. Murdock tied for the state title in the Balance Beam a year ago and followed with a Sectional title in the event this year, while Barkal claimed a Sectional title in uneven parallel bars.
Glenbard West could be poised to improve on last year’s eighth place finish and possibly contend for its first state final trophy. The Hilltoppers return junior Maddie Diab, who won a share of the Uneven Parrallell Bars state title last year and followed with Sectional titles in four events this season (All-Around, Balance Beam, Floor Exercise, Uneven Parallel Bars).
