The 2018 state final field features two first-time qualifiers in Acero-Victoria Soto and St. Teresa. St. Edward is the only returnee from last year's state final field, while Quincy Notre Dame is back at state since winning the tournament 2011.
Semifinal #1
VICTORIA SOTO WOLVES (16-6-2)
Victoria Soto High School, which opened in 2013, is making its first state final appearance in the program’s young history. Head coach Matthew Ribbens has been at the helm since 2016, tallying at least 10 wins in each of his campaigns. The Wolves don’t have a double-digit goal scorer, but nine players who have tallied goals, including senior midfielder Jesus Martinez (9 goals, 8 assists) and senior forward Julian Carrillo (9 goals). Soto has been tested during the State Series, winning four of its five postseason matches by a single goal, including a 1-0 Super-Sectional triumph over Peotone.
ST. EDWARD GREEN WAVE (23-1-1)
Long-time head coach Tim Brieger (238 wins in 24 years) has St. Edward back at state after placing third a year ago in the school’s first-ever state final trip. Junior forward Josh Johansen netted two goals in the third-place match a year ago and has emerged as the team’s top scorer in 2018 (31 goals, 14 assists), while senior forward Uriel Carachure (17 goals, 12 assists) is another veteran scoring threat. The Green Wave has been suffocating defensively, as junior goalie Evan Sajtar (.64 GAA, 93 saves) have allowed a goal of less in 21 matches this season, including 15 shutouts.
Semifinal #2
ST. TERESA BULLDOGS (21-2-3)
St. Teresa soccer has been on the rise with three Regional titles since 2013, but first-year head coach Davis Wegmann has raised the program to new heights, as they prepare to make their first state final appearance in school history this weekend. With goalkeeper Vince Koester at the back end, the Bulldog defense has allowed just one goal in the postseason this year, including handing Earlville Coop its first shutout of the season during a 2-0 Super-Sectional win. Offensively, forward Edgar Onate (50 goals) is approaching a Top 20 goal-scoring season in state history, while senior forward Luichi Caceres (15 goals, 18 assists) has been a catalyst this fall.
QUINCY NOTRE DAME RAIDERS (19-5-2)
The State Finals are familiar territory for Quincy Notre Dame, who will be making their 10th program appearance in the state finals this weekend. This will be the third trip under long-time coach Greg Reis (331 wins in 23 years) and the first since the Raiders won the Class 1A state title in 2011. Senior forward Mitchell Murphy (32 goals, 8 assists) leads a trio of double-digit goal scorers that also includes senior midfielder Peyton Stegeman (15 goals, 5 assists). Junior goalie Griffin Kim and company have been dominant in the postseason, outscoring their fives foes by a combined score of 23-1.
