The 2017 IHSA Boys Gymnastics State Finals will take place at Hinsdale Central High School in Hinsdale on Friday and Saturday, May 12-13. Friday’s competition will determine the 2017 individual All-Around state champion and team champion. On Saturday, individual state champions will be crowned in the Floor Exercise, Pommel Horse, Still Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars and High Bar. Prelims will be conducted Saturday morning to determine the Top 10 competitors in each event that move on to Saturday evening’s finals.
Glenbard West has finished in the Top 5 in the state in four of the last five seasons, and placed second as a team a year ago when they were edged in the finals by Niles West 154.7500 to 154.4000. Niles West did not qualify this year, making the Hilltoppers and their four Sectional champions (Matthew Ideler, Frankie Pham, Shea Rudolph) among the title favorites. That group includes senior Timmy Le, the defending Parallel Bars state champion.
Lyons has a pair of third-place finishes in its program history (2002, 2014), but is aiming to go higher in 2017 behind the tandem of senior Alex Janicki and junior Nick Perez. Janicki enters as a Sectional champion in both Pommel Horse and Parallel Bars, and also has a trio of individual state championships from the 2015 state meet (Floor Exercise, High Bar, Parallel Bars).
Schaumburg appears to be a program on the rise, as the Saxons placed eighth in 2014, jumped up to fourth a year ago and now hope to contend for the first trophy in school history. High Bar Sectional champ Chasen Chau, a senior, may be Schaumburg’s best chance at its first state individual event state champ since 1981.
Palatine enters state with the momentum of last year’s fifth-place finish and senior Prakash Nigam at the top of his game. Nigam won four events at Sectionals (Still Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars, All-Around) and will vie to become his school’s first All-Around state champion.
After posting back-to-back sixth place finishes at state with a young roster, Deerfield looks primed to enter trophy contention with an experienced team in 2017. Four gymnasts (Matthew Kroscher, Michael Norwesh, Clayton Petrasek) won Sectional titles this postseason, including senior Harry Wise in the Floor Exercise, while also earning All-Around honors.
Wheaton Warrenville South/Wheaton North Coop placed eighth a year ago, marking the first time they didn’t leave state with a trophy since 2010. The Tigers incredible run from 2011 to 2015 included three champions and two runner-up finishes. If a new hardware streak develops this weekend, it will likely be thanks in part to senior Austin Tate, who won the Pommel Horse event at Sectionals.
Hinsdale Central returns to the state finals as a team after a three-year absence, as the Red Devils are led by freshman Nolan Holmes, a Sectional Parallel Bars champ. Meanwhile, Buffalo Grove returns to the team field for the first time since 2013 and fourth time overall in search of its first-ever state final trophy.
While they won’t compete for team state titles, a trio of gymnasts that will demand attention in the individual event standings this weekend include Stevenson senior Matt Krames, Elgin senior Nolan Williamson and Cary-Grove junior Luka Sisauri. Krames and Sisauri are back to defend their state championships in the Floor Exercise and Pommel Horse, respectively, while Williamson won the first individual state title in Elgin history when he placed first in the High Bar last year.
