The 2016 IHSA Class 3A & Class 4A Baseball State Finals return to Silver Cross Field in Joliet, home of the Joliet Slammers, on June 10-11.
Fans should note that game times have been adjusted due to the severe temperatures that are expected this weekend. The updated schedule is located on the righthand sidebar or click here for more.
All eights games this weekend will be broadcast live by the NFHS Network on www.IHSA.tv by presenting sponsor Country Financial as IHSA TV veterans Dave Bernhard and Mark Lindo return to call the action.
A brief synopsis and stat leaders on each of this weekend's finalists is provided below:
CLASS 3A
LEMONT INDIANS (28-9)
The Indians return to the state finals after a one-year absence. The program’s first trip in 2014 ended in dramatic fashion, as the team won the state championship on Ryan Folliard’s walkoff hit. Only two regulars return from that title team, a credit to fourth-year head coach Brian Storako’s ability to reload.
Batting Average: .435, Garrett Acton
Runs: 43, Dominic Connolly
RBI: 41, Garrett Acton
Home Runs: 4, Acton & Casey O’Brien
Pitchers (min. 40 inn.): Ryan Sublette (R, 8-1, 54.1 inn., 63K, 2.19 ERA)
Nate Madej (L, 5-2, 53.1 inn., 76K, 2.23 ERA)
Garrett Acton (R, 6-2, 40.1 inn., 64K, 1.04 ERA)
ST. VIATOR LIONS (25-15)
The Lions endured a seven-game losing streak in April and also dropped five of seven in early May. It is clear that playing in the rigorous East Suburban Catholic Conference prepared head coach Mike Manno’s squad for its first state final berth since 1965, as the Lions beat conference foe Marian Central Catholic 2-1 in the Regional Semifinal, and then knocked off its next four opponents by a combined score of 34-8.
Batting Average: .400, Dan Sullivan
Runs: 32, Dan Sullivan
RBI: 38, Cole Kmet
Home Runs: 13, Dan Sullivan
Pitchers (min. 40 inn.): Kevin Napoleon (L, 10-3, 72.1 inn., 85K, 2.42 ERA)
Cole Kmet (R, 10-1, 61.2 inn., 92K, 2.50 ERA)
LIMESTONE ROCKETS (30-7)
Limestone finds itself back in the state tournament for the first time since 2006 and the ninth time overall in program history. It’s the first trip under sixth-year head coach Derek Renz, whose squad has grinded out close games all year long, winning 16 contests by two runs or less, including four of their State Series contests.
Batting Average: .351, Sam Koeppel
Runs: 39, James Welton
RBI: 24, Sam Koeppel
Home Runs: 2, Welton & Koeppel
Pitchers (min. 40 inn.): Tanner Rhoades (R, 10-1, 77.2 inn., 80K, 1.44 ERA)
Bryce Meyer (L, 11-0, 76.1 inn., 95K, 1.10 ERA)
Calvin Peacock (L, 5-2, 53.2 inn., 57K, 3.00 ERA)
SPRINGFIELD SENATORS (33-5)
Springfield’s last state final trip ended with a second-place finish in 1985, two years before long-time coach James Steinwart took over the reins of the program. While the Senators are celebrating their first state final berth in over three decades, they will quickly be refocused by a semifinal opponent in Limestone who topped them 7-5 on May 20.
Batting Average: .438, Damian Pierce
Runs: 43, Damian Pierce
RBI: 46, Damian Pierce
Home Runs: 6, Damian Pierce
Pitchers (min. 40 inn.): Michael Lavin (R, 9-0, 60.2 inn., 58K, 1.15 ERA)
Austin Troemper (R, 6-1, 48.2 inn., 54K, 1.58 ERA)
Ethan Kay (R, 7-1, 47.2 inn., 68K, 0.73 ERA)
CLASS 4A
PROVIDENCE CATHOLIC CELTICS (31-9)
Historically thought of as one of the state’s best programs, the fact that the Celtics had just two state titles in 2013 shows just how difficult the task of hoisting the championship trophy is. Head coach Mark Smith has doubled that total since 2013, as the two-time defending champs now look to become the first school in state history to win three consecutive state crowns.
Batting Average: .434, Mike Madej
Runs: 40, Mike Madej
RBI: 39, Matt Waznis
Home Runs: 4, Waznis & Jim Jeffries
Pitchers (min. 40 inn.): Connor Hilty (R, 7-2, 50.2 inn., 30K, 1.93 ERA)
Tyler Zarembka (L, 6-2, 43.2 inn., 32K, 1.76 ERA)
PLAINFIELD NORTH TIGERS (33-3)
The Illinois Prep Baseball Report’s preseason No. 1 team in the state has done little to disappoint, as John Darlington’s squad enters Silver Cross Field as winners of 28 of its last 29 games. North is the first-ever Plainfield school to reach the state finals, and hopes to represent during a banner baseball season for the district in which all four high schools (Central, East, South) advanced to Sectionals.
Batting Average: .422, Jake Dunham
Runs: 28, Zach Jarosz
RBI: 44, Josh Garner
Home Runs: 4, Josh Garner
Pitchers (min. 40 inn.): Brady Corrigan (R, 10-1, 72.1 inn., 82K, 0.48 ERA)
Josh Garner (R, 7-1, 61 inn., 64K, 1.38 ERA)
Tyler Garrity (L, 9-0, 53 inn., 60K, 1.45 ERA)
ST. CHARLES NORTH NORTH STARS (32-6)
Another first-time state final qualifier, head coach Todd Genke brings the North Stars to state in his 12th season (319 wins) at the helm. St. Charles North is used to playing in close games, as four of its six losses this season came in one-run games. The squad has reversed its fortunes of late, winning its last three games by a single tally.
Batting Average: .381, Brendan Joyce
Runs: 40, Brendan Joyce
RBI: 31, Zach Mettetal
Home Runs: 3, John Legare
Pitchers (min. 40 inn.): Jack Lambert (L, 74 inn., 100K, 1.42 ERA)
Ryan Litavecz (R, 4-2, 43 inn., 32K, 2.12 ERA)
MUNDELEIN MUSTANGS (30-9)
Mundelein head coach Todd Parola led the Mustangs to a fourth-place finish in 2002 and now returns to the finals for the second time in career and third time in school history. Mundelein’s calling card has been pitching and defense in 2016, as the team has allowed one run or less in 19 games this season (12 shutouts), including four of five postseason games.
Batting Average: .426, Brendan Murphy
Runs: 36, Nick Stricker
RBI: 33, Brendan Murphy
Home Runs: 2, Murphy & Jeff Morton
Pitchers (min. 40 inn.): Brendan Murphy (L, 9-2, 63 inn., 102K, 1.00 ERA)
Will Michalski (R, 8-2, 59.1 inn., 66K, 2.12 ERA)
