The 2015 IHSA Girls Bowling State Finals take center stage at The Cherry Bowl in Rockford on Friday and Saturday, February 20-21, when the tournament unfolds for the 43rd time. The 2015 Sectional results produced a rare occurrence, as none of the six Sectional team champions (Belvidere North, Herrin, Lake Park, Lockport, Oswego East, Schaumburg) were among the Top 10 finishers in the state a year ago. Whether this signals a changing of the guard or not will be decided on the lanes, considering that those Sectional champs are joined in Rockford by seven teams who were Top 10 finishers in 2014.
Defending state champion Waubonsie Valley leads off that latter group, although the Warriors lost four seniors from last year’s title team, including individual state champ Julia Bond. Despite the losses, Waubonsie Valley reloaded and returned to state behind the play of junior Violet Kirk (1,220 Sectional score).
Lockport on the other hand finished just outside the Top 10 last year (11th), but tallied the highest Sectional score in the state last week, recording a 6,372 team pinfall. The Porters were led by senior Kiersten Vandenburg, who was the individual Sectional winner with a score of 1,343.
Belvidere North, Lake Park and Oswego East all produced individual Sectional winners as well, as Emily Ashens (1,298), Samantha Sztym (1,325) and Abby Ragsdale (1,434), respectively, all earned top honors to help their teams sweep the first-place hardware.
Herrin was the lone school in the state to knock down 6,000 pins or more in Sectional action without an individual champ, as the Tigers were led by sophomore Cassidy Ray (1,288), a Top 10 individual finisher in 2014 who was one of three Herrin bowlers to score 1,235 or better in Sectional play. The only bowler better than Ray at the O’Fallon Sectional came from the host school, as junior Madson Kasza (10th in 2014, 2,634) won the event with a score of 1,344.
Hoffman Estates placed third as a team a year ago and returns junior Jordyn Fera, who was second on the team a year ago at state when she rolled 2,539 to place 21st overall.
Stevenson junior Kaitlyn Rudy (1,407) was the lone individual Sectional champ who qualified individually this weekend. A fellow individual qualifier, Metea Valley senior Jordan Newham, is the top individual returnee from last year’s state tournament when she placed third with a two-day score of 2,707.
Joliet West junior Gracie Plese was fifth individually a year ago (2,694) and hopes to lead her team to another Top 10 finish (10th in 2014), while Katelynn Wirtel (T11th in 2014, 2,605) tries to put Collinsville into trophy territory after she paced the Kahoks to a fourth-place team finish last year as a freshman.
