The 2014 IHSA Girls Bowling State Finals return to The Cherry Bowl in Rockford on Friday and Saturday, February 21-22. The 2014 state finals mark the 42nd edition of the tournament and the 22nd consecutive year that The Cherry Bowl will host the event.

The tournament is made up of two rounds per day, with three games per round and five scoring bowlers per team. Thirty individual qualifiers will roll alongside 24 teams on Friday, with the 12 teams with the highest total pinfall from their five bowlers moving on to Saturday’s finals. In addition, the Top 30 scoring individuals who are not on an advancing team will advance to Saturday’s competition for a shot at individual state title honors.

IHSA.tv will be there to document all the action and will have highlights from the tournament posted on the website in the days that follow.

Waubonsie Valley captured its first team state title in school history a year ago, when the Warriors surpassed two teams during Saturday’s action after entering the day in third-place. With a trio of Top 25 individual finishers from a year ago returning, including seniors Julia Bond (4th with 2,634 in 2013) and Sara Barsotti (7th, 2,608), the Warriors cemented their status as a tourney favorite by posting the top team Sectional score (6,394) in the state last week.

Speaking of moving up in the rankings, Leyden appears to be on the verge of doing just that in 2014. The Eagles placed seventh a year ago and with four of five scoring players from that team returning, highlighted by senior Reba Hall (9th, 2,571), the squad posted the second-best Sectional score in 2014.

Three-time state champ Lockport was fourth in 2013 and returns senior Ashley Hostert (15th, 2,508), while an Emily Koulis (18th, 2,501) led Minooka squad joined Waubonsie Valley and Leyden as the only other team in the state to break 3,000 during Sectional action this year.

Perennial power Harlem (5 state titles since 2000) was sixth last season and hopes to stay in the title hunt this year behind freshman Mylee McCracken (1,258 at Sectionals). Meanwhile, team qualifiers Metea Valley, Lemont and Schaumburg all enter with the momentum of having bowlers from their teams win individual Sectional titles last week in Jordan Newham (1,398), Kya Udziela (1,332) and Jessica Hales (1,329), respectively. Another trio to watch is O’Fallon’s Kaska sisters, as senior Jordan, who recorded a Top 10 individual finish last year, is joined by sophomore Madison and senior Lindsay.

The IHSA’s individual girl’s bowling champion has accumulated a score of 2,723 or better in each of the past five seasons, a testament to improving play, as the 2,700-pin threshold was met just once (Lake Park’s Theresa Wimberley 2,804 in 2003) by a state champion in the tourney’s history prior to 2009. Joliet West’s Taylor Bailey has led her team to the state tourney this season and she could be a title contender after placing 12th (2,547) as a freshman last year. In addition, individual qualifiers Kailey Kopacz from Oswego East (19th, 2,499) and Rebecca Stricklin from Harrisburg (22nd, 2,488) return to the field after Top 25 individual finishes last season. Sophomore Katey Sauerwin is also one to the watch, as the qualifier from Belleville East won individual honors at her Sectional last week with a score of 1,261.
