Champaign Urbana News-Gazette Executive Sports Editor and sportswriter Fred Kroner is in the midst of his final year at the News-Gazette before retiring, a career that spans 41 years.

Fred added the IHSA Distinguished Media Service Award to his resume when Champaign Central hosted Urbana High School in boy’s basketball on Friday, January 30, 2015.

With his wife accompanying him, Fred covered the contest for the News-Gazette and was honored at halftime. IHSA Assistant Executive Director Scott Johnson presented Fred with his award, while Champaign Central Athletic Director John Wood, who nominated Fred for the award, presented him with some Central apparel to commemorate the evening.

Fred addressed the crowd following the presentations and then took the time to pose for pictures with some Central student-athletes who were appreciative of the coverage he has provided.
