Winning Coach – Joe Muniz, Belleville (West)
We didn't play our best game but I thought we battled. Give Larkin credit, we got up on them and lately, teams have been folding. They battled and found a way to get it down to nine, but we just made clutch plays to prevail.
We felt that we had to guard 21 and No. 1 and the big kid. No. 1 and 21 are good players. I thought if we guarded and rebounded, we would prevail. I thought we'd score enough points. We did enough to win.
The one thing about our team is it's hard enough to try to stop EJ, they have use all their size and strength to stop him. Then when you have Keith down there, he's a load, too. He stepped up and made big plays all night. Keith had an unbelievable game. He's a good player.
Losing Coach – Deryn Carter, Elgin (Larkin)
They're a great team. A 9-0 run to start the game and the run in the second half really put us up against the 8-ball. Against such a great team that has such a dominant presence, it's hard to fight back all the way. I can't say enough about our guys. They fought and they fought and they fought.
We were down seven with 1:30 to go and a 50-50 call didn't go our way and if it does, who knows? I told the guys we didn't get knocked out, we lost in 12 rounds.
They made shots. I'll eat that. Part of game plan was playing inside-out defensively. I knew they could shoot it (but) had you told me before hand that they were going to go 6-for-9 (on 3-pointers) in the first half, we would have done something different. I don't think it was nerves, I think it was them making shots.
