NFHS Spirit of Sport Award

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) developed the Spirit of Sport Award in 2008 as a way to recognize individuals who exemplify the ideals of the positive spirit of sport that represent the core mission of education-based athletics. Student-athletes, coaches, athletic administrators, administrators, trainers and other individuals associated with a school’s activity and athletics programs are all eligible for the honor, which generally recognizes individuals who have overcome adversity or gone above and beyond their peers. The IHSA receives one nominee to represent the state of Illinois each school year. The individuals below are the IHSA’s nominees from each year and are champions regardless of their standing in the awards program.

IHSA Nominees for NFHS Spirit of Sport Award

DAVE YATES  |  FREMD HIGH SCHOOL | SECTION 4 WINNER

Dave was enjoying a legendary career as the head coach of the Fremd girls basketball program when he received devastating news in April of 2023. He was diagnosed with a form of brain cancer, Glioblastoma Multiforme, which is one of the most aggressive types of cancer.  Dave gave no consideration to stopping teaching or coaching as he underwent treatment and chemotherapy. Despite being weakened, he didn’t miss a single practice or game throughout the 2023-24 season. The season proved to be memorable on the court, as Yates won his 400th career game, learned of his enshrinement into the IBCA Hall of Fame, and nearly won his second state championship, ultimately helping the Vikings finish third in Class 4A at the IHSA State Finals.

Dave's Wife Kathy on the 2023-24 Season:

“This school, this program, these girls…they mean everything to him. I didn’t know if we were going to get another day with him. So to see him coaching and have the community rally around has meant more than anyone will ever know.”

Fremd Senior Brynn Eshoo on Coach Yates:

“He has put so much time and effort into us. We talk all the time about how the season is for him, and how we want to win for him.”

Dave Yates on What Kept Him Coaching During Treatment:

“I really enjoy the development of each team within each season. The togetherness that occurs.”
