 The IHSA Individual Wrestling State Finals feature a mixture of old and new in the 2012 edition of the state tournament, as the tourney returns to a three-day format for the first time since 1988. State champions will be crowned across 14 weight classes in Class 1A, 2A and 3A, respectively, at Assembly Hall on the campus of the University Illinois in Champaign. The state meet begins on Thursday, February 16 and will conclude on Saturday, February 18.
While the three-day format is a return to yesteryear, the weight classes look significantly different in 2012, a result of the NFHS making significant changes to weight classes for the first time in nearly 25 years.
The 2012 state meet also marks the 75th in the history of the tournament, the 44th consecutive year that Assembly Hall will serve as the host and the fourth year of the three-class state series.
The move back to a three-day tournament came as a result of changes to the classifications by the IHSA Board in June that led to more wrestlers qualifying for the state meet. Previously, a larger percentage of schools competed in Class 3A, in comparison to Class 1A and Class 2A, which resulted in 16 wrestlers per weight class qualifying for the state meet in Class 3A, while 12 per weight class qualified in Class 1A and Class 2A. The aforementioned changes led to an even 1/3 split amongst the three classes and the tournament was restructured to allow 16 wrestlers per weight class to qualify in all three classes this year.
