The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors met virtually for its regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, where the Board approved one action item and heard two appeals.
ACTION ITEMS
1. The Board approved a recommendation to hire Chris Schwarz as an Assistant Executive Director.
APPEALS & ELIGIBILITY RULINGS
1. The Board sustained the Executive Director’s ruling on a student from Rockford Christian High School. The student was ruled ineligible for non-compliance with IHSA By-law 3.040 and its sub-sections.
2. The Board modified the Executive Director’s ruling on a student from Columbia High School. The student was initially ruled ineligible for the 2023-24 school year for non-compliance with IHSA By-law 3.030. The student will now have eligibility for spring sports in 2024 in accordance with IHSA By-law 3.042.
DISCUSSION ITEMS
At each meeting of the Board of Directors, there are certain items the Board discusses, but upon which no action is taken. The following is a report of those items from the January 10, 2024, agenda:
1. The Board heard a report on the 2023-24 IHSA All-State Academic Team application process. The application deadline for the 2023-24 Team is February 9, 2024. Application forms are accessible via here.
2. The Board heard a report on the 2024 Student Section and Spirit Showdown. The video submission deadline is January 30, 2024. More information can be accessed here.
3. The Board heard a report that the IHSA Foundation will hold its online 50/50 raffle throughout upcoming winter state finals. The proceeds from the raffle help fund scholarships for IHSA students who are current officials or plan to pursue careers in teaching and coaching, as well as events like the IHSA Student Leadership Conference. The 50/50 raffle will open on January 21 at IHSA5050.com.
4. The Board held a discussion on the NFHS Network with its Vice-President Mark Koski.
5. The Board heard a report on the 2024 Let’s Connect professional development conference that was held in Rosemont in early January and attended by five IHSA staff members.
