Careavan: Mount Carmel Defense Gives Up Touchdown That Transcends

Bookmark and Share
Scoring a touchdown in a high school football game is a thing to be savored. Especially when it comes against a program of the magnitude of Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago.

Touchdowns against the 12-time state champion Caravan have been few and far between throughout the years. It is unlikely that the team has ever given up a TD that was celebrated by head coach Frank Lenti in his 33 years leading the team, but that is exactly what happened on Friday, September 2.

With an insurmountable lead in the closing seconds of their contest against West High School (Gary, Indiana), the Caravan defense allowed sophomore Justin Davis to scamper 75 yards for a touchdown.

Davis has autism and other physical and mental challenges. One of the officials who worked the game submitted a Sport A Winning Attitude (SAWA) report to the IHSA after the contest, saying "The elation of the player after he scored the touchdown was a very touching event. Coach Lenti is a class act. He shows that it is not if you win or lose, it is how he instructs his young men to play the game. He is a credit to his school and the IHSA. No words can describe how much happiness his kind act brought to the opposing player."
