Sometimes you’d rather be lucky than good. We were doing a lot of standing around offensively. Hopefully that’ll change. It’s going to have to.
I thought defensively we did a good job. We got away with one -- there’s no other way to put it. At this point, I’m pretty happy (just to get a win.)
About the “miracle” shot: They played great defense on her. She had to throw up a prayer and the prayer was answered.
Kim Morrissey (#40): We had to lay it all on the line. That was it if we wanted to play tomorrow.
Melissa McLaughlin (#44), about her “miracle” shot: I felt really good about it. I just felt positive about it the whole time. I don’t think I saw it go through. I was kind of in shock.
Losing Coach Lori Blade (Carrollton)
You’ve got to give Newman a lot of credit. Their defense was everything we anticipated and then some. We anticipated a war and we got one. There were ten kids on the floor playing hard at all times.
[At the end of regulation] We went to a triangle and two. They did their job. It was just a Hail Mary and it went in. We’ve been in that situation before -- we did think about fouling but we didn’t want to give them three.
This was one of the most pleasurable years coaching I’ve ever had. Their work ethic is second to none.

RECORD(S) TIED OR MADE:
Newman and Carrollton have set the Class A state final record for fewest points in a game with 54 (both teams). The old record was 64 -- Sterling Newman vs. Illiana Christian, 1997 quarterfinal, 39-25. Newman also sets the all-time state final record for fewest points for a winning team with 28. Old record was 30, set by Chicago Marshall vs. Orland Park Sandburg [18], 1981 quarterfinal, and by Wheaton Central vs. Des Plaines Maine West [25] 1985 semifinal. Class A record was 36 pts, set by Teutopolis vs. Sterling Newman [32] 1997 semifinal.
