QUOTES AND NOTES
Winning coach: Mike Winters, Rockford (Jefferson) "If you would have told me that our two leading scorers had six points at halftime and we were up seven, I would have told you you were nuts. I think guys really stepped up and did a nice job and it's the perfect time of year for that."
"I don't think it was our best game but Lincoln had a lot to do with that. If you want to talk about a scrappy bunch of kids, (that's Lincoln). On paper, I don't think this should have been 11-point game. Just by looking at the program people would have assumed this wasn't going to be an 11-point game, they've got a ton of heart and I have a ton of respect for Lincoln and Coach (Neil) Alexander."
"We didn't do a great job of defending against the screens, we did enough. I thought they got too many open looks. I think the difference was our length - a combination of quickness and our big guys are so long that that helps us recover with speed and some size. We're fortunate to have that."
"I think we felt more comfortable because we played them before, we knew what we were in for. We knew they were going to make us work defensively. They're patient, they set screens, and they run their sets really well. Having played them, win or lose, really helped us a lot."
"Our guard play has stepped up six games in a row now. We've been capable of that all year. Our guards are stepping up and getting better every game."
Losing coach: Neil Alexander, Lincoln "Thoughts on the game, they're (Rockford, Jefferson) very big. I think our kids played their hearts out. We had some shots that didn't fall, as a concern we had coming into the game shooting, a place that's bigger than what we're normally playing in. When you rely on shooting three pointers as much as we did, that's a very big concern. So, congratulations to Rockford (Jefferson) I thought they played an outstanding game. I thought they attacked our pressure early in the first half and finally I thought in the second half we'd come out. We had an opportunity there, we had a couple shots, we had the ball to tie or go ahead, and we just didn't get the ball in the basket. I'm very proud of my team, I'd take this team (Lincoln) in the state of Illinois, they have a lot of heart, great kids that work hard and understand our program. I'm proud as I can be with this team, more so than any other team I've coached in twenty nine years."
"We've had some games, their size (Rockford, Jefferson); they took away our back doors. We had to score on back doors or on the three. We tried to run a couple, tried going to the basket and they put them up to the bleachers. That was an important part, and once you took away half our game, we relied on the three pointer. Our kids spent a lot of energy on the defensive end and when you don't have your legs underneath you, your shots down fall. I thought we had some good looks, we created them with penetration. We just didn't get them to go (in). You live with it; you die with it and tonight was one of those nights where we didn't make more points than they (opponent) did."
"I thought the second half we got out and finally got the pressure on them (Rockford, Jefferson) the way we needed it. We made a run at them, I think a couple times we had it (score) down to one, a couple to two, we just couldn't get it over the hump. That's the way the games played and we just didn't get it done tonight."
