QUOTES AND NOTES
Winning coach: Chris Head, Chicago (Westinghouse) - ``It's just good to be back. I just want to make this perfectly clear I'm really proud of these kids no matter if we win or lose. But I'm telling you we don't plan on losing. They don't know how proud I really am of them."
``We did some things in today's game we haven't done all year. I think we played an almost perfect basketball game, if there is such a thing. I'm looking for them to play a perfect game and that may not happen, but if they play in the championship game tonight like they have in the two games since we've been here, we'll get it done."
``These kids here get all the credit for what we do. I just bark at them. They just do what I asked of them and they deserve all the credit."
(On his displeasure with Darius Glover not being selected to the All-State team) ``I just want to clear something up, and you may be mad at me. Anybody who did not vote for Darius Glover on the All-State team is a fool, a damn fool. I'm making it publicly known that you're a fool. He's one of the best inside players in the state and I took it personally when he wasn't on that team. Darius has worked his ass off to be on that team."
``The difference between last year's team and this year's team is Darius and I didn't get along last year. As time goes along, we grew. We grew to understand and we grew to know and love each other. And I do love him and all the rest of the kids. We've learned to respect one another and with that respect has come maturity on both our parts."
Losing coach: Rick Malnati, Winnetka (New Trier) - ``First of all I'd like to say I'm proud of my team. We didn't have one of our better performances today. Not only did we not shoot the ball well, we didn't handle the ball well and I think that was pretty much the fallout for us in the first half. When we did make a run in the second half there was a charge-block call that kind of went against us. It went from four to seven and then we turn it over, it goes to ten and then we were chasing. Not only were we chasing but we were letting them shoot lay-ups."
``We thought going into the game they had one good perimeter shooter and he shot the ball well and we didn't find him. Yesterday the team we played against had a good perimeter shooter and we didn't give him a look at the basket."
``I have to give Westinghouse credit. I think their pressure wears on you a little bit, probably wears on you before the game too, our kids thinking about how were going to attack it. We never really got aggressive against the pressure; we just kept throwing the ball backwards instead of looking down the floor. Our best ball handlers turned it over and I think it was just kind of a trickle effect. Again, I'll give Westinghouse the credit for that."
``My team usually handles the ball a little bit better than they did today. They usually shoot a little bit better than they did today. So, we'll just credit Westinghouse's defense. They really played aggressive. We knew we had some tough match-ups inside. We started the game out okay defensively; we just couldn't make a basket. Everything we did was perimeter; we couldn't get an inside touch. We tried to change that in the second half and even though they extend so much defensively they seem that they cover that up with their quickness. We just weren't reacting and reading. So, disappointing but still proud of my team."
