America's Original March Madness Quarterfinal Game 1

QUOTES AND NOTES

Winning coach: Mike Mooneyham, Herrin - ``We played very well in the first half. We knew they were going to come out in the second half and come at us and go with their big three. The Welker kids are really a handful. It really helped us when Gavin Welker got his fourth foul that shuts them down a little bit. But Ryan picked it up at that point."

``We struggled at the free throw line early but in the fourth quarter we put them down. We spread the floor a little bit, took care of the basketball, and managed to hang on."

``Anything Mike gives us offensively is really a plus. He plays exceptional defense but he hit a big three and hit some free throws at the end that helped seal the deal. We've got a lot of weapons and when they all come to play we're hard to defend and I think that was the difference."

``We came up here to play on Saturday. We didn't want to go one and out and I don't think the kids were really effected by anything today. They played well from start to finish and were really excited about playing tomorrow. We saw Robinson once before in a summer tournament at S.I.U. but that was summertime and this is now. We know the person a little bit and we know they're a very good basketball team. We're just excited to be moving on."

(On the difference in experience levels) ``Farmington had a lot of experience and they hit some big shots at crucial times. It seemed like every time we were one basket away from bringing this game to an end they'd hit a shot that kept them in it. They hit a couple of big three's and again, the Welkers were hard kids to defend. I thought the (Trevor) Williams boy had a tremendous game and he really hurt us. That's what seniors do. They've been here before. It's a shame they have to lose but we're happy to win."

Losing coach: Tom Wierzba, Farmington - ``We made a great run. We did everything I thought we needed to do in the third quarter. We tightened the defense up a little bit better. We got good shots. I thought when Gavin (Welker) got his fourth foul, I thought (Brandon) Brackett came in and did a good job for assisting that one three but not only that, it took (Brian) Algee, it took him out of the lane a little bit and it opened up some driving lanes for us also."

``We had a couple opportunities there where we tied and I don't remember exactly what the scenarios were but there was a loose ball there one time that went off our fingertips they ended up getting it and I think maybe got fouled or got a lay-up out of it and then that gave them a lead again and then we never did get back to the level with them."

``That's when you talk about being a little bit lucky because we're being very aggressive and just came as one of those close but no cigars in getting the loose ball."

``We just tried to tell them not to be intimidated and to take it at them. We were trying to change up a little bit and the couple of things we were trying to do we ran a high-low and we ran some high-lows and we got some good buckets. We missed a lay-up or two that just were really back breakers for us."

``I thought (Brain) Algee played a great game. We did not do as good of a job of doubling him as I wanted to when he turned to the middle."

(On Brian Algee) ``He hit some tough shots. He was an intimidator inside against us defensively. At 6'9" I guess that is what you're supposed to do.
