QUOTES AND NOTES
Winning coach Gene Pingatore, Westchester (St. Joseph)
``Coming in we knew once again we were going to have to deal with Leon Smith. We made the decision that we were going to play our normal defense just the same as we would with any postman who is effective. We were going to try not to do too much different. In other words we were going to double down on him on every opportunity we had.''
``I think the key was that he was going to get his points no matter what you do. We had to do an outstanding job on the other people and I think we really did a pretty good on the other people. Our guys really worked our butts off making sure they did hurt us.''
``The second thing that was key, and we had to make the decision when to do it, was somewhere along the line we had to pull King out of the zone so we wouldn't have to shoot the perimeter shots. In the second half when we up by three we were able to spread them on the floor, get their big guys coming away from the basket which allowed us to go to the basket and not be intimidated. Once we got them into that kind of game we felt we controlled the tempo.''
``We didn't want to be intimidated to the point where we let us people hurt us. We did that in the Proviso East game. We were paranoid about Steven Hunter and as a result the guy who didn't score all year hits 14 points. We knew we couldn't afford to have guys that weren't scoring score and beat us. So that's why I said normal defense, the one we practice everyday and use in every game.''
Losing coach Landon Cox, Chicago (Martin Luther King, Jr.)
``I don't we were tired. I think we didn't play our game. We missed too many lay-ups and I think we missed too many free throws. I think we kind of forgot how we got here in the fourth quarter and that's through Leon Smith. We didn't put the ball in his hands.''
``On top of that we got behind and I didn't want to play St. Joseph's game by getting behind. We make those lay-ups and those free throws maybe we wouldn't be behind. They dictated what happened in the fourth quarter.''
``We had to chase and I had to chase with injuries but I think St. Joseph has a very well coached team. They were quick, quick too quick for us today. Brandon Watkins is very, very quick. Imari Sawyer playing on one leg couldn't stay with him.''
``I don't think we banged the boards as much as we usually bang them. We did too many bad things to win this game.''
