Winning coach, Paul Heitkamp of (Rockford) Boylan High School: ``You know we had three in the first two innings and hung on from there. That’s about it. We had scoring opportunities from there and so did they. Not a lot happened on the score board from there."
(Bryant Salamone on the game) ``Effectively wild. Effectively wild and good defense.”
(Bryan Bergeson) ``He (Salamone) set it up for me. I wasn’t planning on striking anyone out. I just wanted to throw strikes. I wanted to put the ball in play. I only threw a fastball and a curveball. I don’t like warming up because I don’t have that strong of an arm. I threw one out of eight strikes in warm-up. That first throw, that got me going. I like to get the other crowd going because it gives me a little more confidence. I was a little worried, but I tried to have confidence in my team when I got there. I tried not to think of the pressure so I tried to stay calm.”
``Its an older group. There is about five or six of them that are in their second year of fulltime starters on Varsity. They play a lot of ball.”
Losing coach, Tom Myers of Lake Forest High School: ``We’ve got another game to come back down for. We lost a lot of opportunities. We left men on and I thought their pitcher, the lefty, really did a nice job of gutting through. I think he showed an awful lot of courage. And I think that our pitcher, Peter Wolff, after the third inning gutted and kept us in the ballgame."
``Offensively, we’d get our men on base and just couldn’t get them in, which we’ve done in the past games. In key situations we’d get that one hit that would really make a difference. We could just never get even after that first inning. We couldn’t get them to the plate. We had a variation of players. It wasn’t just one player that always had the chance to get them in. We just couldn’t seem to come up with that big hit that would even up the score or put us on top.”
``We blew chances on offense and just left runners on. We didn’t get the good part of the bat on the ball all the time. They got those line drive singles and that is what it takes to score runs on a day like this.”
``We now have to regroup and come back in the second game and take home third. We are one of the top four teams. We kind of came in underrated down here. No one knew much about us coming in and I think they realized that this was a pretty good baseball team coming out. I mean, we can play the game.”
