Illinois High School Association statement following a meeting with representatives of Dwight and Lisle Sr. High School
Illinois High School Association By-law 2.041 provides that students, school staff, boards of education, spectators and all other persons connected directly or indirectly with a member school practice and promote the highest principles of sportsmanship and the ethics of competition in all interscholastic relationships.
On Friday, October 8, during and immediately following a conference football game between Dwight and Lisle Sr. High Schools assertions were made that racial slurs were expressed by players during the contest.
The administration from both schools have individually and cooperatively investigated the allegations. Neither the game officials nor any of the coaches or players were able to identify the individuals alleged to have made such statements. It was confirmed that racially provocative graffiti had been found on a locker in the dressing room used by the visiting team. Both schools have filed detailed reports of their investigations with the IHSA and on Wednesday, October 27, representatives of both high schools met at the IHSA Office to discuss with the Executive Director the findings of their investigation and steps being taken in both schools to insure against any recurrence of such incidents. In addition to their actions within their individual buildings, both principals will make the matter of respect for all others under all conditions a primary subject for consideration within their conference, as well. The IHSA Executive Director has also conferenced with the game officials.
The IHSA has completed its investigation of the allegations made and the actions taken in response by both Dwight and Lisle Sr. High Schools. Having met with representatives of both high schools and having carefully assessed actions taken by both schools to bring resolution to this matter, IHSA accepts the resolution reached by the two schools. It is the IHSA's decision that no further action is required and it considers the matter closed.
