Dual Wrestling Tournament Moving To Augustana

BLOOMINGTON — The Roy J. Carver Physical Education Center on the campus of Augustana College in Rock Island becomes the new home for the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Dual Team Wrestling State Final Tournament beginning next school year.

The tournament will be conducted in Rock Island for three years. Next year's one-day event will be conducted at the Carver Center on Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999. In 2000 it will be on Saturday, Feb. 26 and in 2001 it will be on Saturday, Feb. 24.

The Rock Island facility becomes the seventh different site for the tournament. Last year, East Peoria's EastSide Centre hosted the event when the tournament was unable to be held in Huff Hall on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign because of a scheduling conflict.

The Carver Center will have seating for approximately 3,000 fans and parking for approximately 1,000 vehicles. Augustana coach Kevin Peubla, former state individual champion from Moline, will serve as tournament manager. Augustana has hosted the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Tournament in 1985, 1991 and 1995. The Quad-Cities are one of the wrestling hotbeds in Illinois.

Eight Class A and eight Class AA wrestling teams will compete in the 1999 Dual Team Wrestling State Final Tournament. The schedule will be:

Session No. 1

7:00-7:45 a.m. -- Class A Weigh-in
8:00-8:45 a.m. -- Class AA Weigh-in

Oregon is defending Class A dual team champion and New Lenox (Providence) is two-time defending Class AA dual team champion. Moline finished fourth in last year's Class AA tournament.

The 1999 Individual Wrestling State Final Tournament will be conducted at the Assembly Hall on the Urbana-Champaign campus the weekend (Feb. 19-20) prior to the Dual Team State Final Tournament.
