BLOOMINGTON — Approximately 500 representatives from more than 100 grade, junior high and high schools will participate in the first Statewide Sportsmanship Summit Monday-Tuesday (Sept. 29-30) at the Holiday Inn East and Crowne Plaza in Springfield.

The two-day event is being co-sponsored by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) and the Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) in conjunction with Kathryn Beich, Inc.

A trio of keynote speakers will play major roles in the event, which gets under way Monday (Sept. 29) at 1:00 p.m. and concludes Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. Addressing the opening general session will be Ed Hightower, superintendent of schools in the Edwardsville district and one of the nation's premiere basketball referees. At Monday evening's banquet, University of Illinois women's basketball coach Theresa Grentz will deliver her message of good sportsmanship. Closing the summit Tuesday at the luncheon will be Robert Kanaby, Executive Director of the National Federation of State High School Associations.

"Our keynote speakers rate as the very best in their respective fields and we are extremely excited about the powerful impact that they will have on everyone who will be participating in our very first summit," said IHSA Executive Director Dave Fry. "And the impact that the Kathryn Beich organization brings to our overall sportsmanship campaign with their introduction of Add A. Tude, the new sportsmanship mascot, is something that has not been attempted ever before in corporate America. My expectations for our being able to launch a new direction in sportsmanship are the highest they've been since we put sportsmanship on a priority level within IHSA."

The new sportsmanship mascot, Add A. Tude™, will make its official debut during the opening session of the summit. Selden Marquart, vice president of sales for Kathryn Beich and Wood Hartwell, marketing manager of the Bloomington candy company, will brief summit attendees about the ramifications of the mascot and its involvement with the Beich "Add A.
