IHSA Vice President Dennis Garber Named Principal of the Year

IHSA Board of Directors Vice President Dennis J. Garber, principal of Hoffman Estates High School, was named "Principal of the Year" by the Illinois Principals Association in association with the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the United States Department of Education. He is the only principal in Illinois to receive this honor.

Responsibility, conscientiousness, and dependability are attributes that colleagues associate with Mr. Garber. He has been a driving force behind Township High School District 211's interdisciplinary approaches in curriculum and also has provided leadership by serving as coordinator for the District's science program.

"I am very surprised and extremely honored," commented Mr. Garber. "There are so many great principals in this state that I didn't figure I had much of a chance. This award is special since it comes from the state and national principals' associations, my colleagues.

"If I am considered an outstanding principal, continued Mr. Garber, "it is because of the people around me — my family, my staff, the community that I serve. The Board of Education and the District office have supported my efforts and, without all this support, I wouldn't have been able to accomplish what I have."

Mr. Garber joined Township High School District 211 in 1967. Prior to his appointment at Hoffman Estates High School principal in 1981, he served the District as teacher, coach, and assistant principal. In addition to his responsibilities as principal, Mr. Garber is involved in many community and professional organizations, including serving as vice president of the Board of Directors for the Illinois High School Association.

Mr. Garber will travel to Washington, D.C. at the end of September to receive his award.

Mr. Garber is the second member of the IHSA Board of Directors to receive this honor. Mr. William Wright, Savanna High School Principal, was named Principal of the Year in 1995.
