The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) has announced that a new American Sport Education Program (ASEP) package has been approved by the IHSA Board of Directors for high school coaching certification in the state.
The state of Illinois requires all non-faculty coaches to be certified prior to assuming coaching duties and the ASEP coaching certification course has been the most frequently used program since being approved by the IHSA in 1989.
The new ASEP Program curriculum will include Orientation to Coaching, Sport First Aid and the IHSA by-law exam. This package is priced at $110.00, which is nearly half the cost of many of the previous ASEP programs.
“The addition of this new ASEP program is a positive for our membership schools and for people in Illinois who want to get involved in coaching at the high school level,” said IHSA Assistant Executive Director Ron McGraw. “This program contains all the core elements of other ASEP programs and we are confident that it will continue to give future coaches the skills they need to be exemplary role models for high school students on and off the playing fields. Considering the current economic climate, the reduction in cost for this program will be especially accommodating for our schools and prospective coaches.”
