Minutes of March 2009 Board Meeting  

ACTION ITEMS                                                                                            

1.   The Board approved a recommendation to add three safety measures to the Bass Fishing Terms and Conditions.

      A) All participants and coaches must wear a coast guard approved life jacket and sunglasses, safety glasses or some type of eye protection the entire time they are on the water.  If they do not, disqualification will occur.

      B) There will be a speed limit applied to all sectional and state final tournaments.  The speed limit will be no faster than 35 mph or the lake requirements, if slower than 35 mph.

      C) All boats must go through a safety check prior to the start of each tournament.

ELIGIBILITY HEARINGS

  1. The Board sustained the Executive Director’s ruling on a student from Chicago (St. Rita). The student was originally ruled ineligible for non-compliance with IHSA By-law 3.043.
  2. The Board sustained the Executive Director’s ruling on a student from Kankakee (McNamara). The student was originally ruled ineligible for non-compliance with IHSA By-law 3.047.

DISCUSSION ITEMS

At each meeting of the Board of Directors, there are certain items the Board discusses, but upon which no action is taken. The following is a report of those items from the March 21, 2009, agenda:

  1. The Executive Director announced that the Financial Action Team will hold its first meeting on March 31, while the Growth Action Team will meet on April 16.
  2. The Executive Director updated the Board on the sport of Lacrosse. He reported that under the IHSA Emerging Sports Policy, 61 schools have currently registered having a  Boys Lacrosse team and 43 have registered having Girls Lacrosse teams.
  3. The Executive Director recognized a number of coaches and student-athletes who had recently been honored by the NFHS, including Amy Brechon (Spirit of Sport Award), Dana Miroballi (NFHS Hall of Fame) and all 2008 Section and National NFHS Coaches of the Year
  4. The Board discussed the possibility of rotating the game times of Class 3A and 4A at the girls and boys basketball state finals.
  5. The Board discussed whether the definition of “coed” should be changed in respect to the number of male participants on a coed cheerleading team.
