September 8, 2008
The IHSA Board of Directors announced at its regularly scheduled meeting on September 8 that Activities Week, conducted in conjunction with the National Federation of State High School Associations, is scheduled for October 12-18, 2008. A daily theme or topic is highlighted to recognize the pivotal influences and elements necessary to help high school participants develop into productive citizens.
The Activities Week themes are listed below:

Tuesday, October 14 National Officials Day
Wednesday, October 15 National Youth Health Awareness Day
Thursday, October 16 National Coaches/Sponsors/Advisors Day
Friday, October 17 National Fan Appreciation Day
Saturday, October 18 National Community Service/Participation Day
The IHSA has produced promotional posters for Activities Week and will distribute them along with additional information to all member schools during the week of September 29.
Other Action Items
1. The Board approved a recommendation from the Executive Director to add a Coaches Education Program at Blackburn College to the list of approved coaching curriculums.
2. The Board approved a recommendation from the Executive Director to sign an agreement with Gerry Davis Sports to be the official “Officials Uniform and Equipment Partner” of the IHSA. Officials will not be required to purchase any items from Gerry Davis, but will receive a discount on all merchandise.
Eligibility Rulings
1. The Board sustained the Executive Director’s ruling on a student from Danville (H.S.). The student is a junior transfer from Danville (Schlarman), where he participated in soccer during the 2007-08 school term. The student was originally ruled ineligible for non-compliance with IHSA By-law 3.043.
2. The Board sustained the Executive Director’s ruling on a student from Plainfield (North). The student is a junior transfer from Aurora (A. Christian), where he participated in football last year. The student was originally ruled ineligible for non-compliance with IHSA By-law 3.043.
3. The Board sustained the Executive Director’s ruling on a student from Peoria (P. Christian). The student is a sophomore transfer from Peoria (Woodruff), where she participated in soccer during the 2007-08 term. The student was originally ruled ineligible for non-compliance with IHSA By-law 3.043.
4. The Board sustained the Executive Director’s ruling on a student from Hinsdale (Central). The student is a freshman who is paying out of district tuition until the completion of a home in the district in December. The student was originally ruled ineligible for non-compliance with IHSA By-law 3.031.1.
Discussion Items
At each meeting of the Board of Directors, there are certain items the Board discusses, but upon which no action is taken. The following is a report of those items from the September 8, 2008, agenda:
1. The Board heard a report from the Executive Director on proposals submitted by member schools and other potential by-law amendments. The deadline for submissions is October 14.
2. The Board heard a report from the Executive Director on the IHSA’s ball contract agreement.
3. The Board heard a report from Assistant Executive Director Matt Troha on NFHS National Activities Week, which is scheduled to be held from October 12-18.
4. The Board heard a report from the Executive Director on plans for the upcoming IADA Division Meetings and Town Meetings/Principals Rules Meetings.
5. The Board heard a report from the Executive Director on the upcoming IHSA Workshops. Nine workshops will be held between September 23 and December 3, with topics including IHSA.org, Residence & Transfer, Season Limitations and Summer Participation.
