IHSA AND FOXHILITESCHICAGO.COM ANNOUNCE FINALISTS FOR THE
“FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR” AWARD

CHICAGO -- Illinois High School Association (IHSA) and FOX Chicago have named the finalists for the inaugural IHSA - FOXHILITESChicago.com “Football Player of the Year” award, announced Pat Mullen, the station’s Vice President and General Manager.  This is the only statewide football honor officially sanctioned by the IHSA.

The three players being considered are Steve Filer, Linebacker at Mt. Carmel High School; Sean Cwynar, Defensive End at Marian Central Catholic High School; and Garrett Goebel, Defensive Tackle at Montini High School.  Candidates were chosen by a statewide panel of sports journalists assembled by Corey McPherrin, Sports Anchor for FOX Chicago.  The panel included:

    1. Taylor Bell – Chicago Sun Times
    2. Tony Bleill – Champaign News Gazette
    3. Emily Tropp – Rockford Register Star
    4. Jim Ruppert – Springfield State Journal Register
    5. John Gremmels – Quad City Times
    6. Matt Schuckman – Quincy Herald Whig
    7. Randy Kindred – Bloomington Pantograph
    8. Todd Hefferman – Southern Illinoisan
    9. Wes Huett – Peoria Journal Star
    10. Ashlee Foltz – National Collegiate Scouting Association

Each of the finalists will be profiled on FOX News Chicago leading up to the IHSA Football Championships at The University of Illinois Memorial Stadium, Saturday, November 24th, where the award presentation will take place. The games are presented live on My50 Chicago and streamed on FOXHILITESChicago.com.

The Illinois High School Association, founded in 1900, is a not-for-profit organization of over 750 public and private high schools. The IHSA regulates interscholastic competition in 14 sports for boys and 14 sports for girls, as well as 8 non-athletic activities. The IHSA stages state final events in all of these sports and activities. The IHSA is a charter member of the National Federation of State High School Associations.
