IHSA Response to United Center Super-Sectional Incident

The Illinois High School Association is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the altercation which occurred between groups of students and other fans from Chicago (Crane) High School and Harvey (Thornton) High School at last night's Boys Class AA Super-Sectional contest at the United Center. In response to last night's events, the Association has been in contact with state and local law enforcement officials to secure the necessary security for this weekend's Boys Class AA Basketball State Finals, scheduled for Carver Arena in Peoria, Illinois.

"It appears from talking with security officials from the United Center and administrators from both schools that this incident, while extremely unfortunate, was not something that anyone could have predicted," said IHSA Executive Director Dr. Marty Hickman. "We are pleased and appreciative of the response from United Center officials and the Chicago Police Department in responding to the situation, and we are thankful that, because of their swift action, there were no serious injuries.

"School administrators have also been helpful and supportive in addressing this matter with their respective student bodies. As we continue to investigate this matter, we are confident that given the isolated nature of this incident, that our players, coaches, and fans will be able to enjoy the remainder of our tournament without worry of a repeat of last night's events.

"Should individuals, however, wish to attempt to disrupt any of our interscholastic events and put others in dangerous situations, our office will take all necessary measures to not only ensure the safety of players, coaches, and spectators at our tournament venues, but also to see that violators are punished to the fullest extent of the law."
