The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the American Society for Testing and Measurements (ASTM) have worked to establish industry standards for high school pole vault landing systems. The standard has been set. The following diagram was prepared by NFHS and it arrived in the IHSA Office September 25, 2002. It is designed to provide a clear visual of the new standard pit. Preliminary plans for the pit reported the length from front to back to be 20 feet 5 inches. The final minimum dimension measures 20 feet 2 inches. This new landing pit size is mandatory immediately for high school pole vaulting.
