The IHSA Office has received numerous inquiries concerning the permissibility of displaying the American flag in a patch attached to player and/or officials uniforms. Following is IHSAs policy in this regard.
National Federation playing rules allow for an American flag patch, not to exceed 2 by 3 inches, to be worn on an athletic uniform jersey, provided the patch does not interfere with the visibility of the number on the jersey. A 2 by 3 inch American flag patch may also be worn on a swimming suit or tennis uniform.
It is also IHSA policy to permit officials who wish to place a flag on their officials uniform to do so, provided the flag is not more than 2 x 3 inches in size and is displayed on the left side of the uniform above the heart.
