Board Sustains Stanford (Olympia) Ruling
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors Thursday (Feb. 24) in a telephone conference call heard an appeal from Stanford (Olympia). After reviewing all information provided in the appeal, the Board sustained the Executive Director's decision that the school used an ineligible player in boys basketball between Feb. 12-23 and has become ineligible to compete in the state tournament series.
Olympia reported the use of the ineligible player to IHSA Executive Director Dave Fry Wednesday. The student was in noncompliance with by-law 3.071. Fry instructed the school it must forfeit the Normal (University) Regional tournament game it won against Deer Creek-Mackinaw Tuesday night, and that it was not permitted to advance to the second round against Bloomington (Central Catholic). That game was scheduled to be played Wednesday, but was postponed.
Deer Creek-Mackinaw has replaced Olympia as the semifinal opponent of Bloomington (Central Catholic) and will play at Normal (University) tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 p.m. The winner of tonight's semifinal game will play Eureka in the championship game Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The return of Deer Creek-Mackinaw into the tournament is IHSA standard operating procedure in a team sport state series. The Olympia vs. Deer Creek-Mackinaw game was the first in the tournament series for both teams. In circumstances identical to this, the team receiving the forfeit advances. If a team in the state series is found to be in noncompliance with IHSA by-laws after it has played more than one contest in the respective state series, its next scheduled opponent receives the forfeit win and advances to the next round of competition.
