2002 IHSA Girls Volleyball State Tournament
NOTES & QUOTES

WINNING COACH DENISE LAZZERONI-KAVANAUGH FROM DOWNERS GROVE (SOUTH)
“We prepared more for the gamae today by worrying about ourselves then worrying about the other team. Obviously up to now the other team has had a good record but we just needed to concentrate on our own game. In preparation we knew that Erin Strathdee had a majority of their kills and we wanted to stop her. Their setter also had a lot of kills and wanted to watch out for her. We have a pretty balanced attack right now. We have a full team of 15 players and everyone is ready to fill in if necessary.”

Beth Vrdsky “We wanted to get further than lasst year and not worry about tomorrow before we took care of business today.”
Claire McCormack “All of us have been together a long time. We know it is going to get harder the longer we play this weekend.”
Meghan Macdonald “We were very disappointed last year that we lost in the first game. I think it is great that the younger players are able to come down and get the experience so that when they get older they will be able to lead teams here.”

LOSING COACH TIM ALBRECHT FROM MOLINE
“Obviously we would still like to be playing tomorrow like every team in the state, but we lost to a great team. We are happy to be down here. Downers Grove South is very well balanced with a great setter and a lot of size. I would definately rank them one of the best teams we’ve played this year because they were very difficult to defend. If we could have gotten more sideouts and done better from the service line we would have been able to compete a little better I think.”

Erin Strathdee “They had a really big block but we have had practice against the big block so it was really more of a mental thing than anything.”

WINNING COACH PEG KOPEC FROM WHEATON (ST. FRANCIS)
“This is such an important game here at state. Winning this game means that we get the chance to go on and win the championship. We had success today because I tried to let the girls know what this experience was all going to be like and what was going to happen today from coming into the Arena, to receiving our passes, to the pre-game introductions. All the games here are tough and all the competition is tough so it really doesn’t matter who we play in the next round because everyone is tough.”

Amy Palash “We had a lot of heart today and we were very focused.”

LOSING COACH BILL SCHEPEL FROM LANSING (ILLIANA CHRISTIAN)
“It was an amazing run for us to even be here. Last Saturday was the highlight of my career to win the Super-Sectional and get to State. We knew going into today that we were going to have a tough opponnent. But our main objective was to not let down and we really did that in the first game, but we couldn’t keep our intensity up in the first game. I was very impressed with St. Francis. They can hit the big ball, they can finese tips they just have a all-around game.”

Kim Bultema “We never thought that we could get here what else could you ask for besides getting to RedBird Arena. To hang our heads now would be stupid.”
