 Notes & Quotes
Quotes from IHSA Class AA Quarterfinal #3

Thornwood coach Gary Lagesse:
"We weren't flat today. I saw Lane Tech on Monday and I knew they swing the bats well. They don't get cheated. The top five hitters don't stand and watch. They take their cuts."

"I told out kids that Lane Tech is a good team. They won 24 games and beat a lot of suburban teams. So they're a good ball club. If they had played better defense early, it would have been a much different game. They had as many hits as we did."

We haven't had good practices all week. It's like we've taken a mental vacation all week."

"Our sectional was a very tough sectional. We played good softball there. The games were tense, and there's a tendency as human beings to sit back and relax after that."

"Nadira (Saafir) was in a different zone today. Before the game we weren't mentally prepared. But as a pitcher you just have to adjust."

"Our philosophy coming in was to be aggressive. As the visitors we tried to jump out early and get a lead, and we succeeded. We want to force the other team to throw and catch the ball."

"As a coach, I might lose sleep over our performance, but I have to give Lane Tech credit. Their pitcher threw hard and moved the ball in and out. She jammed us today. We're not great hitters and she was able to get inside on us."

Lane Tech coach Andy Compton:
"Not to take anything away from them, but if we have the defense we played to get here, we would have stayed with them. We gave them a small scare. One play really took us down. It was 7-2 when it could have been or should have been 2-1 us."

(On Saafir): "I read about her as a pitcher and was impressed but yet we hit the ball pretty well. So I'm sorry out defense let us down. If we have our defense in any form, we lost 3-2.:

"When we got two runs, it woke them up. Even then, if we could have stopped them at 5-2."

(On Thornwood jumping from 5-2 to 13-2): "If I knew why we weren't on today, I could have fixed it. We played a lot of good competition this year, and it seems we always have one inning. Mother McAuley, Highland Park. In the Public League, you can get away with having one of those innings. But not here. Give them credit. These guys have more experience handling pressure."

"I didn't want to lose 13-2, buy we're on the upward trail. Going in, I though we could have won."
