Winning coach: Frank Lenti, Chicago (Mt. Carmel) Caravan, ``There is no doubt that this is a little extra excitement there with my son playing for us. My son Frank’s class is a great group of kids Ever since they were freshman we thought they were a special group of kids. There weren’t too many super stars but there were a lot of kids that loved being around one another and there true Mt. Carmel family.’’
``You always win championships with defensive and offensive line play. For most of the playoffs our offense had to carry us but today the defense stepped up big for us. The game plan that my brother David and the rest of the defensive coaches put together as just outstanding. Bloomington was not 13-0 for no reason but for us to shut them out as a real tribute to this team.’’
``I’ve said for a long time that Gregory might wind up being the finest running back I’ve coached in the 19 years I have been the head coach at Mt. Carmel.’’
``We always talk to the kids to give their best. Today I told them I wanted them to have fun but fun was doing something well. It told them there was no need to be nervous but be excited and to have fun. They had earned the right to be here so now show people how good Mt. Carmel football is and they did just that.’’
Mt. Carmel senior wide receiver Frank Lenti - ``It’s ten times better when you can e a part of this rather than watch. You put in all the hard work to get to this point in the season then to win the title is just a great feeling.
Mt Carmel senior running back Greg Owens - ``It’s a great feeling to win the state championship. We had a lot to prove after losing the one game early in the year. It was shock for us but it gave us the momentum Coach Lenti kept us going to make the great blocks, the great tackles and to push ourselves to become a better player and a better team.’’
Losing coach: Rigo Schmelzer, Bloomington (H.S.) Purple Raiders, ``We made too many errors and didn’t capitalize on the opportunities we had. And in this type of game you can’t do that and expect to win. When we were down 10-0 in the third quarter we had the wind to our backs. We had some opportunities on a couple of drives and just didn’t execute.’’
``Our hats are off to them because obviously they are a state championship program. It was a good year and I’m really proud of these kids and the outstanding seniors. It is going to be real hard for them right now to see the good things they accomplished this year but in time they look back and see what they really accomplished.’’
``We were gambling in the first quarter thinking that perhaps if we could find ourselves quickly and negate any great drive of theirs we might be able to playing the waiting game to get to the second period. We found ourselves backed up in the first period when they had an outstanding first drive. It took a while for our defensive kids to realize they could play with them. Our offense never could get on track and that’s a credit to their `D’’’.
``It was disappointing to see us play this way. Maybe it was some nerves, maybe it was some of the calls made but I think a lot of it was the defense we were going against.’’
Bloomington quarterback Andre Brown - ``We’re going to be down for a while but to look back on the season we’ve had and to finish the No. 2 team in Illinois is really not a bad way to end the year. You want to be state champs but only one can be that. We finished second but that’s a lot better than not being here at all. I’m going to tell the guys in the locker room we have nothing to hang our heads about.’’
