 Notes & Quotes
Winning coach, Len Asquini of St. Charles: "Jusitn (Lata) was super. He threw great. He really had them guessing. We had him for 93 pitches. Justin got into a couple of jams and was able to pitch out of them. That was a big lift for us."

``We were able to take advantage of their mistakes. That sun must have really been tough out there. We've learned the hard way. We lost a sectional a couple of years ago the same way. Because of that we have taken positive measures to be sure to take sun glasses out there in the field. Our runs in the first emotionally and mentally were a big difference. When you get that you play more relaxed and Justin was able to relax on the mound. You don't expect a 10-run win in a semifinal game.''

Losing coach, Gary Bender of Rock Island: "It might have beena bit different if those two balls hadn't dropped in. That really opened the flood gates. We knew if they got ahead early it would be a problem for us. You have to give (Justin) Lata credit. He kept us off stride. He's a pretty good pitcher. He was the sharper pitcher today."

Rock Island senior J.J Tubbs played in his third state finals with the 1999 Class AA State Baseball Tournament. He played in the Class 5A state football championship game in 1997 and was the quarterback, free safety and kicker for Rock Island in this 5A tournament which advanced to the quartefinal round. Tubbs was a point-guard on the basketball team which was a member of the 1998-99 Elite Eight and finished his prep career as a shortstop for Rock Island who posted a school record 31 wins. He also was a member of the Rock Island squad which finished third in the 1997 Class AA State Baseball Tournament.

J.J. Tubbs - ``It's disappointing that our teams did not take an extra step to win a championship. But to play three sports and play for the state championship in each of them has been great fun. It's something I'll always remember and be able to tell my grandkids. It's also been a great experience to be part of three different atmospheres because each of the sports is different. I have played with a lot of different types of kids. My three sports are done. I'm going to only concentrate on one in college.''

Tubbs will be a member of the University of Illinois football team next fall.
