The 2013 IHSA Girls Gymnastics State Finals are slated for Friday and Saturday, February 15-16 at Palatine High School in Palatine. The 2013 tournament marks the 37th season that a State Series will be contested in girl’s gymnastics and the 35th consecutive year that Palatine High School will serve as the host.
The team champion, individual All-Around champion and state champions in the Vault, Uneven Parallel Bars, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise will all be crowned on Saturday. Friday’s prelims will determine the Top 10 competitors in each event that move on to Saturday’s finals. Team points are accumulated on Friday, but competitors can add to their team total on Saturday with a higher scoring routine.
Carmel won the past three IHSA Girls Gymnastics team state titles, but won’t be a part of the team field in 2013, nor will last year’s runner-up Stevenson, leaving several perennial powers and newcomers alike with state championship aspirations.
Prairie Ridge (149.525) and Lyons (149.250) both enter in search of their first state titles in school history after respectively posting the two highest Sectional team scores in the state this season.
After placing third in the state a year ago, Prairie Ridge returns a strong one-two punch in sophomores Riley Mahoney and Rachael Underwood. Mahoney was a Sectional champion in the balance beam this season, while Underwood was second in the state a year ago in that event and is also expected to contend for medals in the uneven parallel bars and vault.
Lyons was sixth in the state in 2012 behind Kelsy Kurfirst, who tied for the state title in the uneven parallel bars as a freshman. Kurfirst will be a top contender for the All-Around title as a sophomore, having already posted the top Sectional score in the state a week ago.
Meanwhile, Fremd looks to make it 13 in 2013, as the Vikings’ last state title in 2008 put the program at an even dozen overall. The team is led by sophomore Sydney Plitchta, who tallied Top 10 state finishes in the uneven parallel bars and balance beam a year ago.
Carmel’s team may not be back for a chance at a fourpeat, but seniors Sarah Cohen-Smith and Lauren Feely will both be in Palatine to represent the Corsairs as individual qualifiers, as they look to defend their vault and balance beam state titles, respectively.
